French Foodies

Now for a blog post totally devoted to a subject very close to my heart - FOOD!!!

After our crepe of convenience near the Eiffel Tower on our first night, we were keen to sample some real French food for lunch the next day. We found a fantastic little cafe right near the Versailles train station that did the job admirably.

Croque Monsieur for me.

Steak Tartare for Tom.

Both were very nice! And topped off extremely well with a creme brulee.

Our French food exploration continued that evening in Montmarte (more on that to come), with escargots...

The pictures say it all.

Frogs legs for me.

They actually do taste a lot like chicken!

That was an early evening snack for us, so later on we were still feeling a little hungry and adventurous. We moved on to seafood.

Tom still hasn't learnt not to play with his food.

Neither have I, for that matter.

The most interesting part of that meal was sampling these hermit crab type thingies. They certainly looked appetising! Eugh.

That last shot was me discovering that the round shell-like bit (you can see it in the first hermit crab thingie photo) was in fact shell-like not only in looks but in consistency, and therefore not supposed to be eaten.

Interestingly, they were actually the nicest thing on the plate, once we got past how horrible they looked (and my still dubious expression at the end there).

We visited the Louvre the next day (more on that to come too), but decided that we absolutely had to have some sustenance before attempting it. We again found a delightful little cafe nearby.

Duck and potato pot pie for me...

Some kind of absolutely delicious goats cheese, sundried tomatoes, fig and walnut tart thing for Tom.

They served these cute little olive oil and balsamic vinegar bottles with the salad.
And of course, a lovely little chocolate tarte for dessert!

That evening, we attempted to find our way to the student district for some affordable food. We probably didn't quite make it to the right area, but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.

Trout for me...

Baked chicken for Tom...

The next day we were still museum trekking, and in dire need of food when we stumbled across a little bistro.

I did the unthinkable and ordered something I had already tried - another croque monsieur...

Tom had the onion soup (which was fantastic, by the way).

That evening marked our last night in Paris, and we went all out and ordered three course meals each.

Goats cheese salad for Tom...

Mussels for me.

And then lamb for Tom...

And duck for me...

And then for dessert, Tom got the fromage blanc.

He still insists that it tastes like natural yoghurt, which explains his very vigorous shaking of the sugar container here, to make it more edible.

I had some kind of chocolatey pudding. It was lovely.

Then, on our very last morning in Paris as we dashed off to the train station with our luggage, we treated ourselves to more crepes. Nutella for me...

Nutella and banana for Tom.

Not a bad way to finish in Paris!

Are you hungry yet?
