Beginning Berlin

We cut things very fine in meeting our train from Prague to Berlin, having to run almost the entire trip to the station.

Tom's new trolley worked a treat!

Here I am leaning against the air conditioning vent in the train trying to cool myself down after the run.

Tom tried a different method, rolling up his jeans. Good look, huh?

We arrived in Berlin without further dramas, and set off again, Tom proudly trundling his trolley.

The little train ride to our hotel provided us with some interesting scenery. This political cartoon is painted on the side of a building facing the train tracks.

After finding our hotel, we set off in search of a little bit of sightseeing. Our first attempt was to see the Kaiser Wilhelm church that was almost entirely destroyed in the second world war. Apparently only the west tower remains now, and it has been kept as a ruin to remind people of the terror of war. Unfortunately this was our view of it when we arrived.

It was almost entirely covered in scaffolding, undergoing repair or restoration (not sure which). We did find this visible part.

Tom was consoled by this view.

We decided to give up on sightseeing temporarily, and went shopping instead. Here is Tom trying on some jeans.

The pile of discards.

We briefly considered this hat, but decided to pass.

And since trying on jeans is so hard, we decided we had to refresh our energy with a big hit of protein.

Not exactly German fare, but it was exactly what we wanted at the time.

So ended our first evening in Berlin!
