A Shift in Pisa

Our last day in Florence was also our only day in Pisa. We hopped off for a short-ish stop, left our bags at the train station baggage area (which cost 3 Euro per bag) and was incredibly easy to do, and set off in search of the Leaning Tower.

Of course we refused to pay for a map at the train station, so set out in what we hoped was the right direction.

We enjoyed the artistic symmetry of their letterbox drops...

And their rubbish bins... (yes perhaps we're going a little crazy)

We eventually decided to acknowledge that we weren't heading anywhere that looked touristy, so we stopped in at a hotel and got a map. And then proceeded in the correct direction, finding the river!

All throughout Europe we have been slightly irritated by the frequency and volume of the emergency vehicle sirens. Either we have surprisingly few emergencies back home, or these Europeans have decided to pitch their sirens at a level that makes me want to howl like Allie sometimes does. Tom decided to yell back at this one.

Eventually, we caught our first glimpse of the tower.

Even the nearby church looks a little bit crooked on its left end.

But we had no more time for playing around, we had to start our shift holding up the tower!

Tom gave up in the end and just decided to kick it over.

Once we'd finished doing the touristy thing, we decided to have a little Pisa picnic on the grass. Peanut butter on crackers, in case you're interested.

We intended to rest our weary legs by catching a bus back to the station, but discovered that we would have to wait almost another half hour for the next one. So, we walked. And got to enjoy a few more interesting sights - this statue, that looks like it's lecturing thin air, for one.

And the river again.

Here's Tom consulting the map once again.

We found our way back to the train station much faster in reverse, and if anyone's this was our little walking tour in Pisa, lovingly recorded by Tom, our map man.

And so ended our very very short time in Pisa. On to Cinque Terre next!!!!
