A Change of Tone

After our fairly intense morning visiting Dachau, we left our afternoon in Munich relatively free, to see what took our fancy.

We decided to take care of an administrative task that had been overdue since Rome. Getting Tom’s haircut. It was reaching a very scruffy look, bumping up its priority.

We found a hairdresser that spoke English, and Tom surveyed his options. To go the quiff??

No no, just short back and sides please.

By the way, does anyone else think the hairdresser looks like Rosalie out of the Twilight films?

Like a new man!

We decided to also compare the Big Mac price, just for interest’s sake. 6.19 euro. The equivalent of about $8.85 AUD. Much better than in Switzerland! And I think there’s a chance that may even be the meal price!

With Tom’s ears lowered sufficiently (an old Dad joke), we hopped on the metro and took a trip out to BMW World, with about half an hour to go until closing time.

There was some kind of running race going on at the time, part of which went through the big BMW foyer.

I decided to cheer on some of the runners.

And then we got down to the business of figuring out exactly what there was to do at BMW world other than admire the shiny new cars (not really my thing).

Although I think I could see myself in this kind of car…

We admired the fancy double cone from the inside…

Tom tried a kind of driving simulator thing…

And then he explained the difference between a V8 engine and a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Fascinating stuff!

And then decided to add a musical side to his image.

I pretended to ride a motorcycle. I even made RRRR noises.

Tom decided that he needed to demonstrate how it’s really done.

And then I tried out another driving simulation game, where you had to pedal really hard to get some momentum going.

It was hard work. I hope the real hybrid cars have pedals that are a little easier to use!

When we had had enough play time, we left in search of the other nearby attraction we’d been told about, Olympic Tower, in the complex where the Munich Olympic Games were held. Apparently the view from the top is spectacular, so we had grand plans to try it out.

This was what it looked like from the ground, though.

We figured we probably weren’t going to see much except cloud and mist from the top, so gave it a miss and wandered around Olympic Park in the rain for a while searching for food. The place was almost completely dark and deserted, so we decided to give up and go back in search of civilisation again.

Back to Marienplatz in the city!

And then it was well and truly time to find dinner. It was clearly not a great night to be out and about.

We stumbled across a place called the Hackerhaus, very traditionally German with a long history in the city. Who can pass up a restaurant with a giant boar head on the wall?

And then we negotiated the underground once again, with plenty of entertainment in observing the locals in traditional dress.

Big day, what with our trip to Dachau and then train travel all over the city. An even bigger day (though much less serious) set for tomorrow!
