On a Mana-rol-a

Our third and final day in Cinque Terre dawned not so bright and beautiful as the last couple. We still managed to enjoy it, regardless.

Here’s the waterfront café at Vernazza.

We then caught the train back to the fourth town, Manarola to explore it properly, having spent all our time there the previous evening admiring it from above (see here).

See the little building furthest out on the cliff there? That’s the one that our friends had rented for a week. Gorgeous.

We took a little walk around this headland…

And realised we could spot the reason why the path from Corniglia to Vernazza (which we’d tried and failed to conquer the previous night) was closed.

Yes, it’s a big landslide. Here’s Tom pointing it out on the map.

And pointing to it in reality, just for good measure.

We then said our goodbyes to Manarola and headed back towards the train station, to visit the fifth and last town of Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore.

Like Corniglia, Riomaggiore had a very small actual town centre, which was surrounded by cute little restaurants.

And of course cascading terraced buildings.

We decided to finally try the local specialty, salted anchovies at one of the restaurants.

Our initial reaction in hearing about them was something along the lines of… “hmm! Salted anchovies! That will be… really salty!” And they were. Very very salty. Perhaps it’s an acquired taste.

We moved on to a main course of spaghetti pesto. Yumm!

We waved on final time to the increasingly choppy Cinque Terre sea, and hopped on our last local train, bound for our last stop in Italy.
