Park-ing in Munich

Because we'd spent our first couple of days in Munich primarily doing tours (concentration camps and fairytale castles), it was only on our last morning there that we finally felt like we were actually getting our bearings in the city itself.

We decided to pop around and see the remaining tourist attractions that we hadn't stumbled across previously.

We had to pause to offer some dubious respect for this guy's ability to pack his bicycle.

It reminded us of our comparatively pathetic effort to pile our old trailer high with insulation when we were building our last house.

Anyway, back to Munich, we went for a walk along the river.

Discovered more beautiful buildings...

And their 'beach'...

And took too many photos of the local bird life, as always.

And then we spent a very very long time strolling through parks. Get it? Park-ing?

Oh and found more beautiful buildings...

And statues...

And doors...

And then the monotony of trees, buildings, statues and doors was broken by... surfers??

Yep, that's right! There's a particular section of the river in Munich where there is a perpetual wave, and the local surfers take full advantage of it. It's quite a sight to behold!

Once we were sufficiently mesmerised after watching surfers and water, we decided to return to our morning theme and continued our park-ing.

And baby bird watching.

Actually it was hilarious, the little guy decided to make a run for it when his parents' backs were turned, and they started quacking at him and running after him. You could just imagine them yelling "Cedric! Come back here! Where do you think you're going? That's it! You're grounded!" (By the way, Cedric has always been my name for birds, since I named an origami crane Cedric back in primary school, don't ask why).

The big park in Munich is fantastic. It's absolutely enormous, and you get everything from ducks to horses!

We eventually found the big open-air beer garden that we'd been aiming for for lunch. And started in wonder at this interesting concept. A traveling bar, full of girls drinking beer non-stop.

Once I'd steered Tom away, we admired our other surroundings.

And got ourselves some typical German fare for lunch.

And then we attempted to find our way out of the park to get back to our hotel to collect our luggage.

We managed it eventually (only after wandering in completely the opposite direction to the one we wanted), and recorded our route on our Munich map for posterity.
