Rovinj in Croatia

Again, that’s not a typo. While we have continued roving in Croatia, our next destination was a port called Rovinj.

Once we docked, Tom took the opportunity to dispose of his suitcase, which had not only locked itself shut and refused to open again without being forced, but lost a wheel somewhere in Istanbul, rendering it almost completely useless.

We’d managed to buy another suitcase to replace it (which we really hope will last the distance), so now it was time to send poor Mr Broken to his grave.

Bye bye Mr Broken.

That done, we went on a very short walk of the few streets of Rovinj closest to the boat…

During which, Tom realised his money belt was peeking out from under his shirt. It was a big event.

We were just killing a bit of time before we were due to hop on a bus to visit the little town of Pula about 45 minutes drive away.

We loved Pula. It’s a cute little town with an industrial fishing port, and lots and lots of history!

In fact, it has the sixth biggest amphitheatre in Europe. The Collosseum in Rome is the biggest, but Pula’s is pretty impressive.

Old meets new.

They have a nice little museum underneath in the foundations.

This is an old olive press. The stone bits are original, the timber bits are not.

We then went on a guided tour of the little town. This is a little replica of the town, acting as a fountain.

We were given an hour to wander around at our leisure before the tour began in earnest, so we decided to try a few of the local delicacies. Namely, some gelato and the local Croatian chocolate. Mmmm….

Tom’s selection wasn’t quite as refined as mine.

And then the tour began.

This strip of buildings tells a really interesting story about the town’s history, because each one represents a different style of architecture based on the occupiers of a certain time.

This is a Mussolini building.

This is a part of the original city wall.

At one point, our guide asked us if we wanted to have an adventure. Of course the answer was yes. So she took us into an office building, and out the other side, guess what we found?

That’s right, an old old old building behind bars, the floor of which is a beautiful mosaic. Just hidden behind an office building, with virtually no signs marking its presence!

The guide threw some water down onto it through the bars, to demonstrate how dusty and uncared for it is. You can see the proper colour coming through where the water landed.

And back to the tour!

I’m developing a small obsession for European windows.

So that was Pula. A fascinating little place!

We then hopped back on the bus back to Rovinj, to do a bit of evening exploring there, where we were met with another lovely Croatian sunset.

We started experimenting with black and white that night.

This was a gorgeous looking restaurant beneath the tower.

So that marked the end of our time in Croatia.

Next stop?

ITALY!!!!!

Ciao!
