Enjoying a Dubrovnik Evening

After our chocka block full morning in Dubrovnik, we kicked things up a notch for the afternoon, and climbed up and walked the city wall.

Attempted a bit of shadow kissing...

That's me peeking out from inside the water tower thingie.

And basking in the breeze.

That little white umbrella at the bottom of the picture was a little cafe perched on the rocks, overlooking that gorgeous water. We would have loved to stop and enjoy, but had too much to see still!

What did I tell you about washing lines?

Tom found these outside the maritime museum (which closed before we could get to it - apparently no great loss, according to another tourist we met later).

We even managed to find the wedding party again. Obviously the wedding didn't go very well, since she's trying to drown him already.

These are the same steps that I lounged on earlier. There's something so calm and beautiful about them.

Keen to see Dubrovnik from every angle (and ignoring our very very sore feet), we moved on to the cable car, and ascended above the city.

The size of the picture doesn't do it justice, but the colour of this water was incredible.

There is a little fortress positioned on a little island to the right of the city, that they originally built to deter attack by sea from that direction. It was apparently very effective.

We decided to continue enjoying that view until sunset.

I had to add a few layers. It was pretty cold up there.

We are so spoilt.

And because it really wasn't spectacular enough up til that point, we were treated to one of the most amazing sunsets we could ever have asked for.

But it still wasn't over! We made our way back down into Dubrovnik.

And found a little out-of-the-way restaurant recommended by our Aussie wine bar friend.

First course? Black cuttlefish risotto...

Followed by a seafood platter for two for the main.

Tom managed to convince the prawns to play nicely.

If we're being honest, we've had much better seafood in Australia, but it was absolutely lovely sitting in a candle-lit restaurant with cosy rock walls in the centre of the maze of Dubrovnik streets.

We then realised that we were almost goig to miss the bus back to our cruise ship (docked on the other side of the peninsula), and had to run through that same maze ofstreets back to the meeting point, only to realise that we had well and truly missed it. We had to rush to withdraw some more Croatian currency (having spent everything we had on our meal) and hop in a cab, with less than 15 minutes to go until our boat's departure time. We just made it with two minutes to spare. Whew!

Aside from the last 15 minutes of panic (on my part at least), we had an absolutely fantastic time in Dubrovnik. We packed the day very ful, and were not disappointed. It's beautiful and interesting, and comes very close to rivalling Istanbul as Tom's favourite European city thus far. However we're told that the vast majority of Dubrovnik inome is sourced from tourism, and this definitely comes across. In our opinion it lends the city a kind of insincerity that made us feel like we still hadn't really experienced the real Croatia. But then again, that's the case in any place where the main export is tourism, right? Regardless, we loved it.
