Isle of Capri

Our departure for the Isle of Capri was contingent on us being taken to a woodworking factory. We assume the tour company got a bit of a kickback for taking us there. So we patiently watched the demonstration, admired the gorgeous furniture and chess sets, and fortunately escaped with Tom’s our bank balance unchanged.

My favourite thing there was actually this mirror. In a silvery colour instead of gold, it would be perfect for our bathroom!

And we had yet another giggle at this three-wheeled ute outside.

Then it was time to make our way to the ferry terminal for our crossing to the Isle of Capri.

There’s Pompeii in our wake.

The crossing was a little rough. My expression says it all.

We were quite happy to see land again.

Particularly land with this kind of view.

There really isn’t much to be said. The Isle of Capri speaks for itself.

And, as we are beginning to expect, we got to witness yet another wedding day!

Here we are acting like idiots (what’s new, really?) stretching our hamstrings. Very important when you’re walking kilometres every day! We’re nothing if not diligent!

And then we got to have lunch in this beautiful little café.

Chinking beer and milk glasses. I felt like milk, alright?

And once again admiring the giant lemons.

And then the view. Again.

And again and again and again.

I assure you that this statue wasn’t actually trying to cut power lines, like it looks.

One of the biggest tourist attractions at Isle of Capri is the Blue Grotto. It’s reachable only by boat, via a low cave tunnel, when water conditions are safe enough. It is apparently very spectacular, since the floor of the Grotto (beneath the crystal clear water) is white limestone, making for a spectacular colour when light from the opening above filters through.

In the morning, the sea was too choppy, so we couldn’t go.

In the afternoon, the tide was higher, and although the water was maybe less choppy, it wasn’t safe enough to go through the tunnel.

So no Blue Grotto for us this time around. Instead, we went on a little boat tour around the island, under a sky that got progressively darker every minute.

See the little statue perched on the rocks? It apparently welcomes boats to the Isle of Capri.

We got a peek into a cave.

And then our extremely competent driver aimed for this hole in the rocks.

We made it through in one piece, and then huddled together as we tried to make our way back to shore before the storm hit. Aside from a few drops of rain and another threat of sea sickness, we emerged unscathed, and boarded a very large ferry (thank goodness) back to Naples, where we began our return trip to Rome.

This is my ‘happy to be alive’ face.
