A Morning in Crete

Next stop after Santorini was the island of Crete. Santorini had definitely spoiled us. Crete, although much greener, was very much the uglier sister.

It definitely had its own natural beauty, though. Even a few snow capped mountains peeking through the haze. Apparently our visit was timed with a very dry, sandy wind from the Sahara desert, so many of the surrounding mountains were obscured in the haze.

We just happened to be visiting on May Day (1st May), and these kids were offering wreaths of flowers to passing motorists for the May Day celebrations.

Of course I couldn’t resist the beautiful streets and buildings.

We stumbled upon a church during the Sunday service.

The service is broadcast via big speakers outside the church, so many of the locals were milling around outside listening.

Tom was feeling left out.

Just a little bit further, and we found this beautiful little harbour (which is apparently too shallow for real ships to enter).

The little cafes were gorgeous.

We can say so from experience.

A little less picturesque, but this sight gave Tom a great deal of amusement. Reckon that ute could carry any more weight?

Before our morning in Crete was over, we dashed through the maritime museum.

If we hadn’t bought Tom a hat the previous day, he might have considered this one.

Want to see how a tiller works?

A small lecture on where everything was during the naval battle of crete…

Apparently the Australian army still uses this kind of gun, which was used back in World War II.

Tom then gave me a very detailed description of how a mortar tube works.

On our way back to the cruise boat for lunch we passed a few local musicians…

And that was the end of our morning in Crete.
