Korcula

After Dubrovnik, we continued working our way up the Western coast of Croatia, and docked at a little island called Korcula.

As we are beginning to expect, the water was crystal clear and the town was beautiful.

The city of Korcula (if you can call it a city) has a very sweet little walled ‘old town’.

Tom finally found a chair the right size for him.

No-one home?

Our cruise included a visit to a local auditorium where we were treated to a local sword dance.

The story was of a princess kidnapped by the black prince.

He had an army.

As did the red prince, who arrived to retrieve her.

They agreed to a fight.

The black prince leapt around a bit to show off.

And then the armies fought. They went around and around in a circle, bashing their two swords against each others as part of a dance. I was very impressed by their choreography. They would dance around for a minute or so, and then pace around each other for a break, before starting to leap around again. You could see them getting progressively more and more exhausted.

Of course, the good team won.

Tom thinks he could be a sword dancer.

We had a little bit more time to sample the delights of the town after the performance…

We popped into a little pub/café to use their toilet, and I was very impressed with their wallpaper.

We found a little shop with a lady who makes traditional Croatian cakes, who has all the international awards she’s won hung on her walls. They were good, and she was really good fun.

And that was Korcula. Short, but sweet.
