A Touch of Greenery

After we filled the front yard with pieces of concrete as pavers...

We bought a couple of loads of drainage gravel to fill in the gaps between them and make it a bit less hazardous. Tom then chopped up the old bathroom and toilet doors (saved from the bathroom demolition) to use them as temporary retaining walls, so we could box off the area along the inside of the fence for a patch of garden.

Eventually, when we pave that area properly, its height will be roughly the same as the garden bed, but until then we need to retain the load of nice soil we've also brought in.

I bought some Murrayas from the markets for $20, and left them sitting there in their pots for far too long.

And now I've finally taken the next step and planted them!

I also spread a thin layer of sugar cane mulch around them to try to limit weed growth.

It will be lovely when they grow! A lovely lush green hedge!

And it will be really nice to get a bit of greenery in our barren landscape at long last!

Of course the temporary retaining wall ruins the view a little bit, but as always, it's small steps at a time!
